ABOUT UWMS

I. UWMS: The Corporation

The Upper Westchester Muslim Society (UWMS) established in 1997 is incorporated in the State of New York as a not-for-profit corporation as specified in Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The Upper Westchester Muslim Society is an independent organization, with no affiliation or subscription to any organization.

II. UWMS Summary

UWMS has been dedicated to the establishment of the Masjid and Community Center for more than two decades. On July 31, 2019 UWMS purchased the Rosenthal Jewish Community Center (JCC) located at 600 Bear Ridge Road, Pleasantville, NY 10570. This was the culmination of our efforts to have a home for UWMS. It is certainly a blessed gift from Almighty God. UMWS moved to this location for regular activities in the 2nd week of September 2019. The weekend UWMS Islamic School started on Sept 21, 2019 and is our flagship offering with more than 210 registered students spread over 8 levels.

The UWMS Community Center is a 23,504 SF building attractively situated on a 15+ acre campus with 151 parking spaces. The location is ideal for our community that primarily serves all upper Westchester in addition to adjacent tri-state residents.  The UWMS Center campus is attractively nestled off a picturesque country road just minutes away from the Village of Pleasantville and the Hamlets of Chappaqua, Thornwood, Armonk and 5-15 minutes from southern and northern Westchester towns.

III. UWMS Vision & Mission

Our Vision

Provide a multifaceted community platform for Muslims of all ages and specifically children to enhance and imbibe religious practice as a way of life in combination with education, social and cultural activities that strengthen Muslim identity in all spheres of life with emphasis on individual and collective leadership and excellence.

Our Mission

To gain the pleasure of Allah by serving in the best interests of Islam and Muslims in the Upper Westchester County of New York and adjoining areas and enabling them to practice Islam as a complete way of life. Toward this end, in accordance with guidelines of the Holy Qur'an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), UWMS shall:

  • Establish Islamic programs and projects.

  • Organize an entire spectrum of Islamic activities including, but not limited to social, cultural, religious, and educational activities.

  • Strengthen fraternal bonds and brotherly relations among Muslims.

  • Offer Muslims in Westchester County, New York and adjoining areas membership and active participation in UWMS activities.

  • Promote friendly relations and understanding between Muslims and non-Muslims for the good of the United States of America.

  • Endeavor to make Islamic teachings known to Muslims and non-Muslims, as in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

  • Organize and coordinate various community social work and charitable activities.

  • Endeavor to provide an inclusive place reflecting the community’s diversity in gender, national origins, culture, age, socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

IV. Compelling Rationale

The arrival of Muslim immigrants in the United States is relatively new. The majority of the Muslim immigrants came to the United States as students. Organizations were formed in all universities to cater to their religious, cultural and social needs. Most of the immigrants now have families and children who were born in the United States and are an integral part of the American fabric. Some first-generation US born Muslims already have families and children, who are in colleges and at secondary or primary school. We presently see especially in our community in upper Westchester County a steady rise in first generation US born Muslim families. The Muslim population is multi-national and multi-ethnic including American Muslim converts.

We realize that we must engage our youth and provide a strong community-based environment to reinforce identity and nurture leadership. This requires a concerted effort at the local community level to provide facilities and services for our children and families, very similar in nature to the already established Churches and Synagogues, which, in addition to providing religious facilities and services, offer community-oriented programs.

UWMS envisions our Masjid & Community Center be the hub for all community development activities. The physical size our center and the 15+ acres are in line with the needs of the community, adequately meeting the needs for the next 20 years of anticipated growth. The Board of Trustees of UWMS believes that the purpose is not to simply raise a building, but rather to build a community. We understand, however, that a good facility is essential for establishing a community with members firmly integrated with non-Muslim neighbors and members of other communities. Thus, the Upper Westchester Muslim Society aims to provide a platform for religious and cultural facilities including educational, recreational and social activities open to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
